Solar PV Briefly Explained:

A Photo Voltaic (PV) system is made up of numerous Solar PV panels installed in one location, this is known as an array. The power produced by these panels is measured in KWP, (Kilo Watts Peak). When the sun hits a solar panel, it creates DC electricity. All this DC power gets sent to your inverter, usually located somewhere inside the property. The inverter converts this DC power into AC electricity which your home appliances use.

During hours of sunlight, the array will produce power to be used in your home or business. If your PV system is producing more energy than what your house is using there are a number of options available to you.

Excess solar energy can be sold back to the grid via your electricity provider for a tariff, the rate (€) is set by your provider, it is usually significantly less than what you pay for electricity.

Excess solar energy can also be stored in a battery for self-consumption in the evening or night-time. A battery can be easily added to the system at any stage.

Excess solar energy can heat a cylinder of hot water via an Eddi solar diverter. This device used along with your immersion uses excess solar power to heat the water. Eddi also has a built-in boost button that allows you to manually turn on your immersion as normal.
